About POGO's Federal Contractor Misconduct Database (FCMD)
The government awards contracts to companies with histories of misconduct such as contract fraud and environmental, ethics, and labor violations. In the absence of a centralized federal database listing instances of misconduct, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is providing such data. We believe that it will lead to improved contracting decisions and public access to information about how the government spends hundreds of billions of taxpayer money each year on goods and services. Synopsis: Three crewmen injured while working on the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil drilling rig, which exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010, filed a lawsuit against several companies including BP and Halliburton. A fourth plaintiff, Rhonda Burkeen, was married to a crewman who died in the explosion. The Deepwater Horizon, built and owned by Transocean Deepwater Drilling, Inc., was being leased by BP at the time. The lawsuit claims Halliburton’s faulty work in cementing the well contributed to the explosion. The lawsuit accuses the defendants of failing to properly supervise and train the crew, provide adequate safety equipment and medical treatment, and conduct a proper search and rescue mission.
