About POGO's Federal Contractor Misconduct Database (FCMD)
The government awards contracts to companies with histories of misconduct such as contract fraud and environmental, ethics, and labor violations. In the absence of a centralized federal database listing instances of misconduct, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is providing such data. We believe that it will lead to improved contracting decisions and public access to information about how the government spends hundreds of billions of taxpayer money each year on goods and services. Synopsis: Three residents of Jersey City, New Jersey filed a class action lawsuit against Honeywell International and PPG Industries for health problems that allegedly arose or could arise from the presence of hexavalent chromium residue in sites located in the area. They allege that, for several decades, Honeywell (as successor corporation to Mutual Chemical Company of America) and PPG (as successor corporation to Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company and Natural Refining Company) discharged or deposited hexavalent chromium and other chromium residues at numerous sites in Jersey City. Hexavalent chromium and a by-product called chromium ore processing residue (COPR) have been implicated as a potential cause of lung cancer in those who suffer long-term exposure.
