The government awards contracts to companies with histories of misconduct such as contract fraud and environmental, ethics, and labor violations. In the absence of a centralized federal database listing instances of misconduct, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is providing such data. We believe that it will lead to improved contracting decisions and public access to information about how the government spends hundreds of billions of taxpayer money each year on goods and services. Synopsis: The University of Chicago Medical Center settled a whistleblower lawsuit that accused the hospital of overcrowding babies in its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit from 1997 to 2005 in violation of state regulations and seeking reimbursement from Illinois Medicaid for care provided on days when the unit was not in compliance with those regulations. Without admitting liability or wrongdoing, the Medical Center agreed to pay $7 million.
