Synopsis: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited Honeywell International with 17 “serious” safety violations after its Metropolis, Illinois uranium processing plant experienced a release of hydrogen fluoride vapor in December 2010. Violations included allowing storage cylinders to be exposed to physical damage, using equipment that was not in compliance with recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices, failing to have clear written operating instructions for chemical handling procedures, failing to perform appropriate equipment checks and inspections, and filing a deficient incident report. For these violations, OSHA proposed penalties of $119,000. Earlier in 2011, Honeywell paid more than $12 million in criminal and civil fines for violations at the facility (see Honeywell International instances, “Illegal Storage of Hazardous Waste in Illinois (Criminal Prosecution)” and “Storage of Hazardous Waste in Illinois (Civil Lawsuit)”).
