About POGO's Federal Contractor Misconduct Database (FCMD)
The government awards contracts to companies with histories of misconduct such as contract fraud and environmental, ethics, and labor violations. In the absence of a centralized federal database listing instances of misconduct, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is providing such data. We believe that it will lead to improved contracting decisions and public access to information about how the government spends hundreds of billions of taxpayer money each year on goods and services. Synopsis: Members of the Bodo community in Nigeria sued Shell Petroleum Development Company (Nigeria) ltd in the High Court in London for two massive oil spills in the Niger Delta in 2008. The Bodo community, a rural coastal settlement consisting of 49,000 people in 35 villages, claims the spills devastated over 90 square km of the local land, mangroves and waterways. In August 2011 Shell admitted liability for the two oil spills but not for the amount of oil spilled or the extent of the damage.
