The government awards contracts to companies with histories of misconduct such as contract fraud and environmental, ethics, and labor violations. In the absence of a centralized federal database listing instances of misconduct, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is providing such data. We believe that it will lead to improved contracting decisions and public access to information about how the government spends hundreds of billions of taxpayer money each year on goods and services. Synopsis: Christy Weiser and Greg Pierson filed a lawsuit alleging a scheme of kickbacks, overbilling, and other improprieties by employees of the Louisiana Office of Community Development (OCD) and Shaw Environmental & Infrastructure on the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) to elevate the homes of people who live in flood-prone areas of Louisiana. (Shaw regulates and monitors the program through a contract with the OCD.) Weiser and Pierson also allege they were subject to retaliation because of their whistleblowing efforts.
