In the absence of a centralized federal database listing instances of misconduct, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is providing such data. We believe that it will lead to improved contracting decisions and public access to information about how the government spends hundreds of billions of taxpayer money each year on goods and services. Synopsis: In April 2007, as part of a settlement with the state of New Hampshire, Exxon Mobil agreed to pay the State Environmental Fund $2,041,438 to reimburse the cost of cleaning up gasoline spills at 41 of its gasoline stations. The types of contamination involved included methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), a gasoline additive the state banned in 2007. The state of New Hampshire is also currently pursuing a separate MTBE lawsuit against Exxon Mobil and 21 other oil companies.
