The government awards contracts to companies with histories of misconduct such as contract fraud and environmental, ethics, and labor violations. In the absence of a centralized federal database listing instances of misconduct, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is providing such data. We believe that it will lead to improved contracting decisions and public access to information about how the government spends hundreds of billions of taxpayer money each year on goods and services. Synopsis: Lawanda Jackson, a former UCLA Medical Center employee, was indicted on one charge of illegally obtaining individually identifiable health information for commercial advantage following revelations of privacy breaches involving at least 61 patients at the facility. She is accused of receiving at least $4,600 from an unidentified “national media outlet” in exchange for providing the private medical information of celebrity patients. In December 2008, Jackson pleaded guilty to a felony charge of violating federal medical privacy law for commercial purposes.
