Baggett v. HP (LaserJet Printer Lawsuit)
Lawsuits challenged Hewlett–Packard’s practice of including a “hardstop” on its color laser jet printers that shuts down all printing operations when a toner cartridge reaches “empty,” even though some toner remains in the cartridge. Plaintiffs alleged that the toner cartridges would shut down even though some toner was left, and that in certain printer models the shutdown could not be overridden. The lawsuits were settled in 2011 for $5 million.
