Hicks v. Maersk (Somali Pirate Incident)
Richard Hicks, a crew member on the Maersk Alabama, a U.S.-flagged cargo ship that was captured by pirates off the coast of Somalia in April 2009, is suing Waterman Steamship Corp. and Maersk Line Limited claiming the two companies negligently exposed the crew to danger by sending them into pirate-infested waters near Somalia without providing appropriate levels of security and safety. He claims that he suffered serious and permanent injuries as a result of the incident.
