TCE Contamination at Kansas Airport
The federal government recovered from Raytheon costs incurred under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) for the cleanup of trichloroethylene (TCE) at the Tri-County Public Airport in Herington, Kansas. Beech Aircraft Corporation, a predecessor to Raytheon Aircraft Company, operated the airfield during the 1950s. The court found Raytheon solely liable for TCE contamination of groundwater at the airport and ordered it to pay approximately $3.2 million for the Environmental Protection Agency’s response costs.
