Philippines Excise Duties Lawsuit

The Philippines Bureau of Customs filed a complaint against the local unit of Royal Dutch Shell (Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp.) accusing the company of evading import duties and taxes. The government accuses Shell of “intentional misclassification and misdeclaration” of its petroleum imports from 2004 to 2009 to avoid the payment of excise duties and value-added taxes (VAT). The government is seeking P24.5-billion (US$ 566 million) in unpaid taxes and penalties.
