Utah Attorney General Avandia Lawsuit

The Utah Attorney General filed a lawsuit accusing GlaxoSmithKline of illegally marketing its Avandia diabetes drug as a new “wonder drug” that would reduce cardiovascular risks for diabetics at a time when studies showed that Avandia significantly increased cardiovascular risks. The state alleged that GSK defrauded Utah out of $7.8 million, the amount the state Medicaid program spent on Avandia from January 2001 through June 2010. In December 2013, GSK settled the case for $8.5 million.
