Illegal Storage of Hazardous Waste in Illinois (Criminal Prosecution)
Honeywell International, which owns and operates a uranium hexafluoride (UF6) conversion facility in Massac County, Ill., was found to have stored nearly 7,500 drums of potassium hydroxide (KOH) mixed with uranium compounds at the site without a permit. Honeywell pleaded guilty to one felony offense of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Honeywell was sentenced to pay a criminal fine of $11.8 million (plus a $400 special assessment), serve a five-year term of probation and provide approximately $200,000 to fund a community household hazardous waste collection and disposal program.
