Erika Sinking and Oil Spill
Total S.A. was convicted of negligence in 2008 for overlooking maintenance problems on the Erika, an oil tanker it had chartered that sank off the coast of Brittany in December 1999 and spilled 30,000 barrels of oil into the ocean along France’s coastline. Total was fined 375,000 euros (approx. $500,000) and ordered to pay nearly 200 million euros (approx. $260,000,000) in damages to the French state and the local fishing industry.
