Out-Of-Network Reimbursement – NY Attorney General Investigation

UnitedHealth Group settled a New York attorney general investigation into allegations that its Ingenix health care billing database under-reimbursed physicians who provided out-of-network care. The investigation found that by distorting market rate data, UnitedHealth was able to keep reimbursements artificially low and force patients to absorb a higher share of the costs. It was also determined that UnitedHealth’s ownership of Ingenix created a conflict of interest. UnitedHealth agreed to abandon Ingenix and pay $50 million to create an independent nonprofit organization to help determine fair out-of-network reimbursement rates for consumers throughout the United States.
