RDX Pollution of the Holston River

The Tennessee Clean Water Network (TCWN) filed a lawsuit against the Department of Defense and BAE Systems Ordnance Systems for dumping Research Department Explosive (RDX) into the Holston River 822 times since May 2012. RDX is used in explosives production at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant, which is operated by BAE. TCWN claimed the defendants violated the Clean Water Act by discharging RDX, a possible human carcinogen, into the drinking water. In September 2015, the parties reached a settlement by which BAE agreed to implement corrective measures by July 2020.
