Beryllium Disease Prevention Program Deficiencies at Pacific Northwest National Lab
Battelle Memorial Institute agreed to pay the federal government $200,000 to settle a Department of Energy (DOE) investigation into the company’s monitoring of beryllium at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington. Beryllium was used at the lab until the mid-1980s. The DOE found that Battelle failed to conduct routine beryllium sampling at the lab for several years. The DOE also found that guidance documents used in support of work planning to characterize beryllium hazards lacked a valid approved technical basis, were inconsistent with program requirements, and did not accurately reflect conditions in the lab.
