False Reimbursement Claims for Minnesota Environmental Cleanup

The State of Minnesota is suing BP alleging that the company fraudulently sought reimbursement from a state fund for cleaning up leaking underground petroleum tanks at gasoline stations around the state while also being reimbursed by insurers. The lawsuit alleges that from 1988 to 2012 BP obtained over $25 million from the state’s Petrofund (Petroleum Tank Release Cleanup Fund), which reimburses petroleum storage-tank owners and operators for cleanup costs, while hiding that it was also receiving insurance payments for the same sites.
