Improper Application for New Mexico Environmental Cleanup Funds
Chevron Corporation paid $5.2 million to settle claims by the New Mexico Attorney General that the company improperly applied for and received approximately $4 million from the New Mexico Corrective Action Fund, a state environmental cleanup fund. The state alleged that Chevron falsely attested it did not have and did not collect outside insurance to pay for cleaning up petroleum contamination from the company’s underground storage tanks at gas stations throughout New Mexico. The state claimed that Chevron had been receiving payments from insurers through secret settlements.
