False Reimbursement Claims for Minnesota Environmental Cleanup
The State of Minnesota settled allegations that Chevron USA and ExxonMobil fraudulently sought reimbursement from a state fund for cleaning up leaking underground petroleum tanks at gasoline stations around the state while also being reimbursed by insurers. The state alleged the companies obtained funds from the state’s Petrofund (Petroleum Tank Release Cleanup Fund), which reimburses petroleum storage-tank owners and operators for cleanup costs, while not disclosing that they also had insurance policies covering the cleanups. Under the settlement, Chevron paid $1.975 million and Exxon paid $550,000.
