EEOC v. FedEx Ground Package System (Discrimination Against the Hearing Impaired)

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) claimed that FedEx Ground Package System violated the Americans with Disabilities Act nationwide by failing to provide needed accommodations to deaf and hearing-impaired employees and job applicants. The EEOC claimed that FedEx failed to provide such accommodations as American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and closed-captioned training videos during the mandatory initial tour of the facilities and new-hire orientation. The EEOC also alleged FedEx failed to provide such accommodations during staff, performance, and safety meetings and refused to provide needed equipment substitutions and modifications for deaf and hard-of-hearing package handlers. In May 2020, FedEx Ground Package System agreed to pay $3.3 million and implement a range of accommodations as part of a consent decree settling the lawsuit.
