Northern States Power Company et al. v. General Electric (Sherco 3 Generator Turbine Failure)

A lawsuit alleges that General Electric fraudulently concealed a defect in a GE-manufactured steam turbine used at the Sherco 3 electric generator plant in Becker, Minnesota. The turbine failed in November 2011, causing the plant to shut down for 17 months while undergoing $200 million in repairs. An investigation found that stress corrosion cracks had developed where turbine blades attach to the rotor, and concluded the cause was solely a function of the original design and manufacture. The lawsuit alleges that General Electric and its service affiliates knew about this problem in its turbine blades since at least the 1960s but did not inform purchasers.
