Discriminatory and Deceptive Credit Card Practices
General Electric’s credit card unit, GE Capital Retail Bank (later renamed Synchrony Bank), agreed to pay $228.5 million in penalties and consumer remediation to resolve allegations of discriminatory debt relief promotions and deceptive credit card add-on practices. GE Capital allegedly violated the Equal Credit Opportunity Act by excluding Hispanic customers from two of its credit card debt-repayment programs. GE Capital was also accused of deceptively marketing its debt cancellation products. In total, about 746,000 consumers were affected by the allegedly discriminatory and deceptive practices.
