Elias v. Hewlett-Packard (False Advertising)
David Elias filed a class action lawsuit claiming that Hewlett-Packard recommended graphics cards to customers purchasing computers that the company knew were not powerful enough to handle the upgrades. Elias purchased an HP Pavilion Slimline s5305z computer through HP’s website in 2010 and opted to upgrade the computer to include a “recommended” graphics card. He alleges the computer’s power supply unit was inadequate to handle the graphics card, causing the computer to behave erratically within the first year and short out after 17 months. He claims HP concealed from customers the fact that the recommended graphics card required a higher-wattage power supply unit.
