National Association of the Deaf v. MIT (Discrimination)
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) claimed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology discriminated against deaf students by failing to provide closed captions in their online courses, in violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act. The lawsuit claimed that thousands of videos provided through MIT’s OpenCourseWare web-based courses lack captioning or contain inaccurate or unintelligible captioning. MIT settled the lawsuit in February 2020, agreeing to provide accurate captions, supply written transcripts for audio content, and pay more than $1 million in attorneys’ fees.
