U.S. v. Williams (FEMA Home Elevation Grant Program Bribery)
Wanda Acker Williams was charged with conspiracy to commit bribery on the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). The HMGP was set up to help victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita rebuild and elevate their homes by providing grants of up to $100,000. According to the government, Williams, while working as a mitigation analyst with the Shaw Group in the New Orleans office of the HMGP, accepted money from a contractor consultant in exchange for providing the names of homeowners eligible for the grants. Williams pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months of home detention followed by four years of probation.
