UC Irvine Anesthesia Services False Claims

The University of California paid $1.2 million to settle a False Claims Act lawsuit alleging falsification of records and inadequate patient supervision by UC Irvine anesthesiologists between 2002 and 2011. Former UC Irvine School of Medicine professor and anesthesiologist Dennis O’Connor alleged that nurses administered anesthesia when there were no supervisory anesthesiologists present, that anesthesia records were falsified to make it appear that a supervisory anesthesiologist was present, and that post-operative evaluations were given by unsupervised or unlicensed residents.
