New Jersey MTBE Lawsuit
Valero Energy and several of its affiliates agreed to pay $17.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in 2007 against nearly 50 companies alleging they were responsible for contaminating New Jersey’s waters with the gasoline additive methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE). DEP alleged that it had identified over 5,000 sites where MTBE had been detected and sought monetary damages as well as cleanup and removal costs.
