Illegal Mobile Cramming
Verizon Wireless settled Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) allegations of illegally billing wireless customers over a hundred million dollars in unauthorized third-party charges from about 2004 through 2013. The CFPB alleged that Verizon’s billing system allowed third parties to “cram” unauthorized charges on customers’ mobile-phone accounts, and that Verizon ignored customers’ complaints about the charges. Under a consent order, Verizon could pay up to $70 million in consumer refunds and an indeterminate amount in federal and state fines.
