Louisiana Neurontin Antitrust Lawsuit

The Louisiana Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Pfizer alleging the company filed sham patent infringement lawsuits in order to keep less expensive generic versions of its epilepsy drug Neurontin off the market. The lawsuit claimed that Pfizer violated the state’s antitrust and consumer protection laws and maintained an illegal monopoly for at least 30 months, during which the state to paid unlawfully inflated prices for Neurontin. In May 2017, Pfizer settled the lawsuit by agreeing to provide Louisiana with 60,000 vials of naloxone (aka Narcan)—a drug that reverses the effects of opioid overdoses—worth about $1 million.
