Charlton MTBE Contamination Settlement
The town of Charlton, Massachusetts and Exxon Mobil reached an agreement estimated to be worth $30 million regarding methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) contamination caused by gasoline spills dating back to the 1980s. Exxon agreed to install infrastructure that will supply clean water to MTBE-tainted properties. The agreement also includes a $7.75 million cash settlement with the town and $250,000 to fund a Water Superintendent.
