Waste Handling Violations at Hanford T-Plant
The Washington State Department of Ecology issued a $50,000 penalty to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its contractor, CH2M HILL Plateau Remediation Company, for mishandling dangerous waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation T-Plant facility. The agency also ordered DOE and CH2M Hill to designate waste, obtain detailed analysis of dangerous waste before storing, and properly maintain records. The waste included five containers holding leaking batteries, paint chips, concrete pieces, and grease. Some of the waste potentially contained low levels of radiation. In July 2017, the state agreed to waive the penalty in exchange for CH2M Hill establishing a temporary holding area at the facility for waste that has not been analyzed and enhancing its record-keeping practices.
