Korea Kickback Prosecutions
According to media accounts, six current or former employees of Novartis Korea were indicted on charges of offering kickbacks to doctors in return for prescribing its products. The Seoul Western District Prosecutors’ Office indicted former company CEO Moon Hak-sun and five other executives, as well as 28 doctors and heads of medical journals on charges of giving and receiving cash and other kickbacks. In April 2017, the South Korean government fined Novartis 55.1 billion won (US$48.8 million) and suspended insurance coverage for some of Novartis’ drugs.
