California Climate Change Litigation

Marin and San Mateo Counties and the City of Imperial Beach, California, filed lawsuits against 37 oil, gas, and coal companies for damage caused by the combustion of fossil fuels, which the companies have allegedly known for decades contributes to global climate change. According to the plaintiffs, the 37 companies are responsible for approximately 20% of all industrial carbon dioxide and methane pollution between 1965 and 2015. The plaintiffs allege these emissions cause rising sea levels, putting Marin and San Mateo Counties and Imperial Beach at increased risk of floods and erosion.
