Barrientos et al. v. CoreCivic (Forced Labor at Georgia Detention Center)
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) filed a class-action lawsuit under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act alleging CoreCivic (formerly the Corrections Corporation of America) forces immigrant detainees at the Stewart Detention Center to work for as little as $1 a day to clean, cook, and maintain the facility. The lawsuit alleges detainees who refuse to work are threatened with solitary confinement and the loss of access to basic necessities, including food, clothing, personal hygiene products, and phone calls to loved ones.
