Sexual Harassment of a Female Flight Attendant

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed a lawsuit accusing United Airlines of subjecting a female flight attendant to a hostile work environment of sexual harassment over a period of many years, in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The complaint alleged a United captain frequently posted sexually explicit images of a United flight attendant on various websites, making reference to the flight attendant’s name, home airport, and sometimes referencing the airline’s tagline, “Fly the Friendly Skies.” The complaint also alleged United failed to prevent and correct the pilot’s behavior, even after the flight attendant made numerous complaints and provided substantial evidence to support her complaints. In December 2019, United agreed to pay the flight attendant $321,000, plus attorney’s fees, to settle the lawsuit.
