Hunters Point Naval Shipyard Cleanup – NRC Investigation
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued notices of violation to Tetra Tech and a former employee, Justin Hubbard, for a Severity Level III violation involving the falsification of soil sample surveys during the cleanup of radioactive contaminants at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard Superfund site. The NRC found that, on several occasions between November 2011 and June 2012, Hubbard deliberately substituted “clean,” non-radioactive soil samples for contaminated samples and misidentified the locations from where the samples were obtained. The NRC proposed a $7,000 civil fine on Tetra Tech. Subsequently, the NRC agreed not to issue the civil penalty in consideration of Tetra Tech’s agreeing to certain conditions, including conducting “refresher training” of its employees regarding NRC regulatory requirements and procedures.
