Vermont MTBE Pollution Lawsuit

The state of Vermont settled a lawsuit brought against more than two dozen gasoline refiners and marketers—including BP, Chevron, Exxon, Shell, Total, and Valero—alleging the companies caused widespread pollution of Vermont’s groundwater with the gasoline additive methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), a suspected human carcinogen. The companies agreed to pay the state a total of $3.8 million.
