Overcharging U.K. Gas and Electricity Customers

Shell Energy Retail Limited agreed to refund and compensate around 12,000 electricity and gas customer accounts after the U.K. Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) found Shell overcharged customers on its default tariffs when an energy price cap was introduced in January 2019. According to Ofgem, the 12,000 customer accounts affected around 8,800 customers. Shell (named First Utility at the time of breach) also paid £200,000 (US$254,000) to Ofgem’s consumer redress fund, equating to a total payment of £390,000 (US$495,000).
