Tagging Contract Fraud and False Accounting
The UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO) entered into a three-year deferred prosecution agreement with Serco Group subsidiary Serco Geografix Limited (SGL). SGL took responsibility for three offenses of fraud and two of false accounting arising from a scheme to mislead the UK Ministry of Justice as to the true extent of the profits its parent company, Serco Limited, made between 2010 and 2013 from its contract to provide electronic monitoring (“tagging”) services. SGL paid £19.2 million (US$24.1 million) plus £3.7 million (US$4.7 million) related to the SFO’s investigation costs. Compensation to the Ministry of Justice had been paid in 2013 as part of a separate settlement agreement.
