Pennsylvania Health Care Coverage Violations
UnitedHealthcare agreed to pay a civil penalty of $1 million and spend $800,000 on public outreach after a Pennsylvania Insurance Department audit found violations involving the company’s coverage of mental health care claims and other deficiencies. The audit, which covered the period from January 2015 through March 2016, found extensive noncompliance with mental health parity and prompt pay laws, as well as problems with the company’s coverage for services relating to autism spectrum disorders and substance use disorders. UnitedHealthcare also agreed to pay restitution to consumers whose claims were wrongly denied or delayed.
