U.S. ex rel. Burgess v. Navistar Defense (MRAP False Claims)

Former Navistar Defense employee Duquoin Burgess alleged the company overcharged the U.S. Marine Corps by $1.28 billion for Mine Resistant, Ambush-Protected (MRAP) vehicles used by troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Burgess alleged that Navistar Defense and its parent company, Navistar International, violated the False Claims Act by forging invoices, catalogue prices, and other data during contract negotiations and during the subsequent placement of delivery orders for MRAP vehicle components including chassis, engines, and suspension systems. In December 2019, the U.S. government intervened in the lawsuit. In May 2021, Navistar Defense agreed to pay $50 million to resolve the lawsuit.
