Nordan v. Blackwater (Wrongful Death)
The families of four Blackwater Security Consulting contractors who were killed and mutilated in Fallujah, Iraq, in March 2004 filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company. The plaintiffs claimed that Blackwater broke its contractual obligations to the workers—Stephen Scotten (“Scott”) Helvenston, Mike Teague, Jerko Gerald (“Jerry”) Zovko, and Wesley Batalona—by deploying them on their mission without proper equipment and personnel. In 2012, it was reported that the company (then known as Academi), settled the lawsuit for $635,000.
