Unsafe Conditions at the Otay Mesa Detention Center
Margarita Smith and Gregory Arnold, guards at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Otay Mesa Detention Center, accused facility operator CoreCivic of failing to take adequate measures to protect staff and detainees from the novel coronavirus. In two separate lawsuits, Smith and Arnold claim that CoreCivic didn’t provide protective equipment such as masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer, institute social distancing, or regularly clean surfaces. Arnold also alleges that CoreCivic failed to train its employees in how to deal with infectious diseases.
