Federal Racial Discrimination Probe of Newport News Shipbuilding

Huntington Ingalls Industries subsidiary Newport News Shipbuilding paid $3.5 million to settle Department of Labor Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) claims that it discriminated against Black applicants in hiring for various craftwork jobs. The alleged racial discrimination stemmed from OFCCP’s routine compliance evaluation of a 2011-2012 audit. OFCCP claimed the company failed to uniformly apply its job selection criteria, resulting in a statistically significant hiring difference of white and Black applicants to 10 different jobs including electricians, pipefitters, and sheet metal workers.
