A.B. et al. v. The Regents of the University of California (UCLA Medical Center Sexual Abuse)

The University of California paid $316 million to settle claims that the University of California, Los Angeles failed to protect women who were sexually abused by Dr. James Heaps, a gynecologist at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center who was arrested and charged with multiple counts of sexual battery in 2019. Heaps was accused of making inappropriate and sexually suggestive comments to patients, removing patients’ clothing without consent, and recommending unnecessary procedures and overly frequent examinations. The settlement involved thousands of women who were seen by Heaps between 1983 and 2019.
