Anacortes Refinery Toxic Vapor Release

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Equilon Enterprises LLC—doing business as Shell Oil Products US—settled violations of the Clean Air Act stemming from a February 2015 release of toxic vapors from the company’s Puget Sound Refinery in Anacortes, Washington. The release, which lasted for over 3 hours, caused strong odors in nearby areas and led some residents to seek medical attention. Shell paid an EPA penalty of $191,514 and state and local penalties totaling $420,000.
