Friends of the Earth Netherlands et al. v. Royal Dutch Shell (Global Carbon Emissions Lawsuit)

In a lawsuit filed by environmental groups, a Dutch court ruled that Royal Dutch Shell must reduce its global carbon emissions 45% by 2030. The court found that Shell’s emissions reduction plans were not adequately concrete, and that the company didn’t sufficiently rebut claims that its plans to invest in new oil and gas exploration were not compatible with its stated goals to reduce carbon emissions. Shell was also ordered to pay costs and fees (estimated to be €22,733 [approx. $28,000]).
