Selling Ineffective Hand Sanitizer

Federal Resources Supply Company (FRS) reached a settlement with the Massachusetts attorney general (AG) over claims that the company marketed and sold a product falsely claiming to be an effective hand sanitizer alternative to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The AG alleged that FRS in March 2020 misled the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) into ordering thousands of dollars’ worth of “Theraworx Protect” hand sanitizer which contained no alcohol and was therefore ineffective in fighting off the virus. FRS agreed to pay $400,000 and issue MBTA a credit of $154,393.
